Slide-out RV camper awnings make big difference for those fed-up with cleaning slide-outs’ roofs from leaves and debris; simple concept, silent work, they do the job automatically….
No matter where you go, there is going to be something taller than your RV that is going to shed stuff.
It might be trees and leaves; it might be the sky with its rain & snow.
At some point you're going to power up your slide out and make your living area bigger.
When you are ready to close it up, are you going to climb up on top with a broom and sweep it clear of debris before you slide it back in? Wouldn’t it be nice if it was totally worry¬ free and all you had to do was close it up again?
With a properly designed spring tensioned awning it can be exactly like that. With the winding drum on the outside edge, nothing gets rolled up inside! The slippery surface sheds leaves, water, and snow as it retracts, and the top of your slide out never has foreign matter like dirt or insects that come inside your vehicle.
SideOut Kover III
The SideOut Kover III by Carefree of Colorado fits slide-outs up to 42 inches depth and 49 – 146” wide. These simple devices not only keep your slide out clean, but reflect sunlight to reduce excess heat, and shield your seals and gaskets from UV deterioration from the sun.
DIY (Do-It-Yourself)
You can have a slide-out topper installed at many RV sales & service centers. If you’re a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) type, they are among the easier projects to tackle. The following video shows a couple of guys making presentation of how it’s done.
Dometic also makes models that can be purchased in widths from 66 – 192 inches. Most manufacturers have either entirely enclosed models or the sort that automatically close an anti-billowing cover over the awning to prevent damage during travel.
Solera® Slide Awnings are manufactured by Lippert Components, and like most others in this class, are permanently attached as OEM, or can be purchased as After Market additions (see above for self-installation tips). They claim to be a cost-effective alternative to other slide out awnings.
The Girard G-5000 Automatic Slide-Out Awning System is optimally mounted as close to the roofline as possible. Their intention is to create a “self-cleaning” slope of 40° that will shed leaves, snow, and water. This is one of the few units whose storage spool is mounted on the trailer. This loses the rolling edge which sheds any debris that persists when it retracts. To solve that, they build in a fabric “brush” at the drum that is supposed to prevent contamination from entering and rotting there until you open it again.
The Chesapeake Slide Out Cover from Silver-top® is completely different from any other. It is custom designed for your slide out, based on dimensions you provide. It mounts permanently (but can be removed). It is a solid unit and doesn’t roll up or retract. When the slide retracts, it hangs straight down and is secured with two or more latch-down hinges. The top edge adaptor slides into the standard J-rail.
I hope these choices help you make a decision that works for you!
